Happy 2013!

To all of our Jennie Kay a Beauty Parlour fans, brides & blog readers — Happy New Year!

A new year is the perfect time to try new things, to laugh more, to be kinder to everyone you meet, and to become a healthier and smarter version of yourself.

Here are some of our tips to starting this new year off right, beginning with yourself:

*APPRECIATE & Drink LOTS of water: We don’t appreciate water nearly as much as we should ; drink it throughout your day. Water is an essential part of maintaining a healthy body and mind. It cleanses and detoxes your organs, aids in a flawless complexion, and keeps you alive.

* EAT HEALTHY: Stay away from processed foods and beverages. As much as they taste delicious, your body will hate you for it later. Natural foods free of processing and preservatives keep your system running smoothly. Sure, we all cheat from time to time, but try to make healthy eating a lifestyle.

* Need a little change? Try a new HAIR CUT or COLOR: You wouldn’t believe the difference a little change in your haircut and color can have on your mood. Add some highlights to frame and lighten your face, make your eyes pop and your skin sparkle.

* FEEL BEAUTIFUL: Treat yourself to a facial or massage to start off 2013 feeling your best. There are great places on the island to visit for these treats: The Apothecary Newport, The Hotel Viking, SPAVANA  to name a few.

* Changing Jobs? Have a big interview?: Treat yourself to a new outfit, one that makes you feel and look your best. Even a new necklace or pair of shoes can change your entire mood when going into an important meeting or interview; you will ooze confidence.

* WORKOUT: You don’t need to become a gym rat. Fitting in 20 minutes of cardio or upping the amount of movement you do in a typical day can change the way you look and feel. Buy a new pair of exercise pants, or new sneakers to up your motivation. Changing your routine the slightest bit can do wonders. Check out this post by Melissa Gardner on how to make time to exercise, even just a little!

Don’t set unrealistic goals.
Take one day at a time, appreciate all that you have.
Look at things through someone elses’ eyes.
& Don’t strive for perfection, strive to do better.

We hope that 2013 brings nothing but peace, success, happiness and of course beauty to all!

To our 2013 Brides: We wish you love & happiness, we can’t wait to work with you on your special day! :)

Happy New Year!

What do I need to touch up?

What should I bring with me for touch ups on my wedding day?!

This is a question I have from my clients at least once a day.

Some examples: NYX Blotting Papers; Makeup Forever 'Full Cover' Concealer; Stila Blush 'Petunia'; All Available at Sephora Stores. Jennie Kay Glosses, available at the beauty parlour

In my professional and personal opinion, you should have these 4 things in your clutch on your wedding day

  1. Blotting Papers
  2. Concealer
  3. Lipgloss
  4. Blush

Your photographer can likely camouflage any bags, shine, or puffiness under your eyes, however, these items are key to insuring you are confident, and worry free in all of those instagram, tweets, and facebook posts you are tagged in throughout the day! Above we’ve shown some examples of great products that are small and compact enough to fit in your purse.

Don’t hesitate to ask your stylist about colors and products that would work best for you on your day — i.e: color matching concealer, a lipgloss that closest matches the color your artists uses on you, etc.

On your wedding day, Jennie Kay Beauty also offers additional staying time for hourly touch-ups if you or your bridal party need. Our professional tools, endless makeup, techniques, and experience ensure you will look your greatest on your day. Don’t hesistate to ask about this service and seek pricing for your day.

xoxo Jennie Kay

Obsessed with TOO FACED!

For those of you that know me in the flesh. I am very pale, NC20 in MAC makeup talk of  to be exact. While I do love to be pale as I am always out and about never laying there baking in the sun (not my idea of fun) I wear SPF 30 on my face every day all year round. I do love to dabble in some bronzing powder for the summer. Lately I have been in love with Too Faced Cosmetics! I cannot get enough of their bronzers, mascaras, primers….you name it they have got it! Now lets be honest. As a makeup artist I always shied away from this product line when  I walked the aisles of Sephora. I thought it was “too young” for me and this wasn’t a makeup for a professional makeup artist. WELL I could not have been farther from WRONG. Now about half the products in my makeup bag are Too Faced . Everything I have tried from them has now replaced a product I once loved. Now what are they? Lets get to it…

My Loves…

1. Aqua Bunny Bronzer

Texture is a cream to powder. What i love about this bronzer is I can wear it with or without a base (foundation, tinted moisturizer, etc…) It is a very blend-able movable cream that give a nice healthy glow. The best part is it SETS! This product is not going to move! It is also layerable..meaning you want to be darker…well then add more.

*** brush it comes with is pretty amazing so just toss this in your beach bag this product is not moving so you can go in and out of the water and you will still look GORG!

2. Better Than False Lashes Mascara

The title says it all. This 3 step mascara is not only better than False Lashes but you know the corners wont lift on these lashes and this is much faster than putting some lashes on. Al you do is Prime with the base coat that helps the fibers adhere to your lashes in step 2 , these nylon fibers lengthen and thicken my lashes and and and they stay up and out of my eyes ( my lashes sometimes go back to pointing in my eyeballs without a good mascara) Step 3 you seal the fibers in. I like to apply 2-3 coats here. Honestly you will not believe how amazing your lashes look. They will stay full and curled all night! BEST PRODUCT OF THE YEAR!

**** Make sure you are careful after apply if your lashes are still wet and you touch them they may stick together

3. Chocolate Soleil Matte bronzing Powder in Milk Chocolate

I know …your thinking too bronzers right? Yes I love them both equally for different reasons.

  1. It smells like chocolate… really it does
  2. It is matte! I love this because I can contour my face and it looks natural. I not shimmering like a stripper on stage.
  3. There is not one tiny bit of orange in the bronzer. In fact I used to used a very old beauty powder from MAC and this is obviously the new replacement. Orange you glad this bronzer isn’t orange. oh good me too!
  4. natural natural natural…On my own face I tend to be the no makeup…makeup girl. This is how I like it and this product does the trick!

*** if i use Aqua Bunny and Milk Chocolate together i use the Aqua first. I let it dry and do my eye makeup then I go in at the end and I contour my cheeks with the Milk Chocolate with an angled blush brush

4. Shadow Insurance

Hands Down BEST BEST eyeshadow primer out there. I prime my eyelids and I prime under my concealer so it stays put all day. Now let me tell you tried and tested from a good friend of mine. She walks into my Beauty Parlour one day with neon green eyelids…hmm i thought (shes a makeup artist too) this is a different look for her. She then tells me as she is looking in the mirror I am testing two primers out. Which lid is brighter? I pointed to one she said I knew it. Again Shadow Insurance beats them all. Naturally I pulled the tube I had in the drawer test out this product out. Um ya she was right. It has outlasted several of it competitors.

  1. Better color payoff
  2. Longevity of your shadows (crease & fade proof rem ol’ green lids)
  3. Brightens and smooths lid if worn alone***I love to use this before my concealer to help it last longer. So when you apply it make sure you apply before face makeup and go right under your eyes as well :)

5. Perfect Eyes Waterproof and tear Proof Eyeliner in Perfect Purple

First off lets talk about this color purple. The swatch on Too Faced is a bit more purple than real life. The color is perfect. Being a mother of a 15 month yr old I naturally have bags under my eyes. What I love about this color purple that it does not enhance the bags and make me look like I have 2 black eyes. It is just enough to give these ol’ brown eyes a boost to look  a slight bit hazel (that’s what us brown eyed beauties love) The pencil eyeliner is great  it glides on smooth there is no skipping on the lash-line like some pencil that are too dry can do.  The opposite  end of the pencil is an angled sponge applicator to smudge the line to give you a nice buffed look on the lash line. One thing that does bug me is the packaging, the quality of the product is there. But after I open the pencil I like to put the top on the opposite end so I don’t lose it.  I cannot seem to muscle it on there. This eyeliner will stay in your inner rim and will no rub off under your eyes throughout the night. This is great for any event that is going to be all day…like your Wedding Day!

Let me know your favorite Too faced Products!

Sneak Peak: Style File

Summer has crept upon us, wedding season is in full swing. Been a little behind on the blog lately, but back at it!

In between cuts, colors, and bridal trials galore, we’ve been working on another segment of the style file collaboration with my friend and photographer, Erin McGinn!

The rain held off in downtown Newport long enough for us to gallivant amongst tourists in colorful getups and sparkling jewels from Francesca’s Collection Newport

Here’s a peek at one of today’s shots!

Jennie Kay’s Style File

I had the pleasure to collaborate with one of my besties Erin McGinn. The fabulous photographer, writer, stylist, & editor of the amazing Bliss Publications. Erin and I came up with a concept for my traveling beauty chair. It really came naturally to us. Erin said “hey can I take a few pics of you? I have an idea”, of course I said “yes can I bring my hair chair everywhere we go??” Erin laughed and said “yes, you can say ‘my chair goes everywhere!’” There you have it, my traveling beauty chair went from the private dock on bowens wharf, to Easton’s beach, to Sweet Berry Farm … my chair travels everywhere!

My favorite part of the day was when we set up camp in the wharf outside The Clark Cook House a woman started clapping and said yaaa! we are going to have a performance, and then she asked if I wanted to “borrow” her dog… Seriously there is never a dull moment when Erin and I get together!

Erin and I really love the hunt, that is the hunt for a great prices and a unique find. We are sequin hunters, TJ Maxx stalkers, and vintage store hoarders.

Fashion: Inspiration Brighter the better and colorblocking

Chair: Jennie Kay Beauty Traveling Chair

Orange Dress: Tj Maxx
Hat: TjMaxx
Skinny Belt:  Jcrew Outlet
Blue High Heels from DSW: Seychelles

For our first shoot. I went a bit natural. My hair was colored with a ombre effect. If you are unsure what ombre is I do it here at the beauty parlour and you can read about it here on my blog. I then went it with my favorite waving iron to create an effortless beachy tossled wave. (I waved my hair away from my face) Yes effortless quick hair! p.s. feathers were in when we shot this and yes I fully embraced the fad and I admit I miss them. They were so pretty! Check out my hair  below

Jennie Kay Hair:

Step 1: Split hair down the middle for a center part.

Step2: Grab you Curling Rod which you check out here if you do not have one to see my fav

Step 3: Section you hair into 3 sections and clip each section out of the way. This is so you make sure you don’t miss any hairs (section in layers and think of a tiered cake; top section, middle section, and bottom section)

Step 4: Wave the hair with the first wrap around the iron away from your face. Continue throughout your whole head

Step 5: Spray with A light hairspray Osis Elastic Fix then cocktail Osis Dust it an Osis 4-play mix both between hands start at the nape of your neck and finger through hair

Makeup Makeup Makeu: Now if I haven’t mentioned this shot was for my ads in some publications. I wanted the pictures to really look like me. I love natural makeup, its just my thing, so the makeup I used was very clean and simple.

For this shoot Specifically I used:concealor

Ps. The above photo I took in my salon :)

Step 1: Moisturize!!

Step 2: You can do this in your car like me :)

Step 3: Conceal under eyes and Blemish with Cargo Cosmetics One base concealor + foundation in one (must have!)

Step 4: Too Face Aqua Bunny Bronzer is applied all over the face you can see my video here on how to apply bronzer

Step 5:Makeup Forever Uplight  is your highligher you want to place that on high points of your face also in video here

Step 6: Apply Stila Prime Pot taffy all over lid (use finger works great less is more!) An dab some Stila Kitten eyeshadow on the lid over the taffy (not shown in pic)

Step 7: Curl lashes first then apply Loreal voluminous mascara start at root and wiglle wiglle wiglle towards tips

Step 8: Smile and add Stila convertible color in gladiola to apples of your cheeks and lightly put on lips

Step 9: Finish with JENNIE KAY gloss in Patty cakes (available for purchase at the beauty parlour)

(You can watch an application of a similar look on our Tune In Tuesday Video’s on the JKBP Facebook fan page! https://www.facebook.com/Jenniekaybeauty)

Tangerine Tango

What better way to channel Summer (with recent 70+ degrees in New England, it happens to be closer than we think!) than with a bright, cheery, loud and playful ensemble or makeup look? A color you’ll see this year worldwide is the Pantone color of the year, ‘Tangerine Tango’. What is a Pantone color of the year? It is a color shade declared by the Pantone company which is mass-adopted by various industries (print, textiles, paint, and etcetera).

Tangerine Tango Fabric Palate

This attention grabbing color is sure to stand out against the rest, offering a wide spectrum of oranges, corals, and subtly neon.

Check out some of the spring runways’ and designers’ use of Tangerine tones!

Some Spring 2012 Looks

Not daring enough to sport a bright orange frock? The thing is, you can incorporate this bright color in minor details, whether it be a simple accessory or lipstick color. Try a slightly more subtle grab at it, with tangerine nail polishes, and makeup hues…

Photo Creds: lovingyou.com; makeup.com; trend911.com; glamour.com

Accessorize with tangerine hues!

Love Tangerine :)

Spring is here, bring on the colors!

Bliss Celebrations Launch

This past Thursday night, the Beauty Parlour team attended the launch of Bliss Celebration’s 2nd issue. The event was located at the Providence Public library. The library was transformed into a glamourous space; a purple and blue glow lit up the room, with seemingly stenciled designs and shadows projected across the ceilings and walls. Orchids, florals, and jewels were placed on complimenting decorative cocktail tables. Naturally, gourmet appetizers lined the bookshelves. We met new friends and reconnected with familiar faces. It was an excellent night! Be sure to pick up a copy, and keep a eye out for our ad on page 206 of the issue :) .

The PLUMB Wedding PICNIC

This blog entry is long overdue but it has been on to do list. I do weddings for a living and yet  I never posted my own. Matt and I got married on June 6, 2010.

It was an amazing day, and by far the best wedding I have ever been too! A day that had a tornado warning yet not a drop of rain fell wherever  we were. It rained in several parts of Newport but we were apparently under a own little  umbrella.

We decided to have a private ceremony at Battery Park in Newport, RI. A park that was dear to both of our hearts. It was just immediate family.

My sister and my mom and my amazing mother-in-law to be all got ready at the Beauty Parlour. I stepped in to my custom made gown by the fabulous Jonathon Joseph Peters from project runway season 7, a1 11:30 and made my way to the park in a 1966 blue pontiac bonneville convertible.

After the ceremony where we were married by my amazing and loving uncle. We head back to my in-laws house to take pictures and snack {I was starving}. My amazing friend and photographer Daniel Gagnon was there very step of the way. My second shooter was my other amazing friend Erin Mcginn. {yes all my friends are amazing} We took pictures from the beach to the golf cart rides  up the hill and back to the house.  Meanwhile on the other end of town it was  still down pouring  and where we were not ONE drop on us!

Our guest arrived at 2pm. We greeted them at the door. It was so nice to be able to talk to all of our guest before the Plumb Picnic began. All 300+ guests mingled care free and danced for hours. We didn’t do a formal sit down dinner we opted for a stress free do want you want day. We had the kids swimming in the pool to me booging on the dance floor. We ended the night with some fireworks, and went home as Mr and Mrs. Plumb. NOW before you run ahead and check out  out all of our FAB pictures form the  day  I thought it would be interesting to share with you what we should have done different …..this is my Shoulda Coulda Woulda list

Shoulda Hired Sharkpig as a videographer, I really wish we had a videographer , at the end of the day you can go a relive your wedding After all we all  know bride get the post wedding blues

Coulda Taken more time to do pictures of myself and sister (make a list of the shots you want I never did this opps! )

Shoulda Put my hair up!!! I mean I am a hairstylist and I do weddings why did I have my long hair down on such a hot day. I know I always end up putting it up! Should have gone up!

Woulda Went to one last dress fitting….I changed my shoes last minute. I had originally had a big heel but if you know me I don’t do well with heels so I opted for a kitten heel and never told Jonathon so  needless to say my dress was a bit too long…opps

Other than that I would have changed anything I married the man of my dreams and couldn’t be happier…..First comes Love, Then Comes Marriage….

The details I loved compliments of Jessica Castiglia Events and the Plumbs that really made our wedding unique

  • Rehearsal Dinner at Brick Alley Pub the night before with clam chowder, shrimp, roast turkey breast, beef tenderloin…..
