How to Wear Your Hair on Your Wedding Day

Some helpful tips from a hair professional…
Here is what you want to consider that you may not have thought about.

What does the neckline of your dress look like?… Is your dress simple or very detail orientated?… Are you changing into another dress after the ceremony?

Now you may be wondering what do these questions have to do with choosing a
hairstyle? They actually have a lot to do with completing your look.

First. if you dress has a detailed high collar like the one shown below I suggest you wear your hair
up to show off the back your dress. I mean, why buy a dress with a fabulous neck
back if you are going to hide it?

Dress: Rivini

Dress available at www.thewhitedressbytheshore.com

Second . if your dress is very detailed and you have a lot of detail -beading & jazz- going on, I
like to compliment and balance the dress; the hair should be cleaner, rather than tousled or messy. You do
not want to take away from the dress. You should not have a wild gown and wild
hair…this could look like a disaster! :]

Dress: Rivini

Dress available at www.thewhitedressbytheshore.com

Third. are you changing into another dress? If you are, why not change you hair
too? If you opted to wear a cocktail-style dress for the dancing, put you hair
up.
Don’t do what I did and put your hair in an “ugly ponytail” ;]
after dancing all day for the remainder of your wedding day.
This is a special occasion, dress it up!
Don’t judge, shown below yes I did put my hair in a pony to dance — EEEK!
Consult with your stylist to see if a second professional look is best for you!

Before
After

Do you have a second dress to change in to? Try a second look such as this:

Dress: Ivy and Aster (credit Carla Ten Eyck photography, Beth Chapman styling, and Jennie Kay Hair)

Ok…now that we have answered these questions where do you go from here?

Create a pinterest board of styles you love. Keep in mind that if you have naturally black hair and you are pinning & liking pictures of platinum blondes, the style will not look the same on you.

Once you have pinned your hairstyles, go back and look over them. Do you have a theme? Did you pin mostly hair that is pulled to one side, or did you pin half up? Narrow down your choices to bring to your hair trial. The more you have an idea of what you want from your hairstylist the easier it will be to execute your look.

Now that you are in the hair chair, here is what I tell my ALL of my bridal bombshells. I am going to be very honest with you . This look needs to flatter you. My goal at each and every trial is to enhance my clients features. For example. If you have chosen a style that is not the most flattering look on you, I will be on honest and tell you what best suits you and we will make adjustments to make sure you’re gorgeous, stunning and flawless on you your wedding day. Together we are a team and what looks good on my bride, looks good on me! :]

Trials are going to be more time consuming and challenging than the day of the wedding, remember that. We are testing out the best look for your facial features, dress and the vision you have on your day . In my opinion the trial hair should be just as beautiful as the wedding day but it may not be as secure because we are rearranging and tweaking throughout the process.

You should take pictures yourself to have and I am sure your hairstylist will take pictures and notes as well. If you do not have your veil with you not to worry! Explain to your hairstylist what you veil looks like and how it will be attaching to your hair {plastic comb, metal comb, clips, hooks} Be sure to check out our blog on how to choose a veil as well!

Best of luck to all brides, & we look forward to working with all future Jennie Kay Beauty brides!

To Try: Ageless Derma Skin Brightening Cream

Are you a lifeguard, plagued with years of sun beating on your skin and face? Maybe you’re a beach bunny, who lives for summer sun. Maybe you’re just an average person who has had their fair share of sun, and environmental factors, aging you by the decade. Years of sun exposure can do a number on the appearance of one’s skin and complexion. Though preventative measures may have been taken to fight aging, it is sometimes inevitable that skin spots from all sorts of causes can occur. Sure makeup can cover and camouflage their appearance, why not fight these stubborn spots with a product that is derivative of natural ingredients and no harsh chemicals?

This natural formulation of ingredients is proven to enhance skin appearance — in terms of tone, brightness and evenness. Ageless Derma Face Brightening cream is affordable at $50 and has proven to provide customers with bright and luminous skin. One of its top ingredients, NET-DG Licorice Root is a natural anti inflammatory. BV-OCS is a form of Vitamin C an ingredient that whitens skin, as well as Bio-White, an ingredient derivitive of plant substance that inhibits melanin production, thus creating a more even canvas of skin, and Belides, which comes from a daisy plant and also serves as a whitening and brightening agent. According to Agelessderma.com, another key ingredient used, Alpha Arbutin, “is a new skin-lightening ingredient that works faster and more efficiently than any other single lightening ingredient currently used in anti-aging skin care.”

This product is great for everyone — whether you are susceptible to uneven skin tone with the changing of seasons, acne, age spots, scarring, blemish spots etc, this product just might be the perfect fit for you!

Unique Bridal Veils

Today I stumbled across some of the most unique, delicate, and vintage-y bridal veils and headpieces on Etsy. I’m telling you, Etsy is one of the *best* places to find bridal accessories, gifts, accents, etcetera … I’ll say it once & I’ll say it again.

These veils by Melinda Rose Design are handcrafted and breathtaking. To me, there is nothing more appreciated and respected than items today that are handmade and one of a kind … as it is quite a hard thing to come by. Have a look at these stunning, vintage style bridal veils from Melinda Rose Design. They are even quite affordable.

Left: a bonnet-style lace and flowered head veil. Top Right: A very unique cape-style veil with intricate dot embellishments. Bottom Right: For the girly girl, a touch of netting with a white silk bow.

Jennie Kay brides, brides to be, or bridal party members — definitely recommend Etsy to your loved ones as a go-to in finding wedding must-haves!

Jennie Kay Bride: Alexis M.

“I really couldn’t have been happier with my makeup for the wedding.  I was a bit nervous about having airbrush makeup applied because I was afraid it wouldn’t look natural- but Jennie Kay Beauty did such a great job. It lasted all night, and in fact I still looked pretty damn good when I got up the next morning. ;) My mom was even won over & she can be a tough critic. When I saw her after my trial she was stunned. When I met my husband Chris for dinner that night, he just couldn’t stop staring, and just kept saying “wow. you look SO beautiful” (and he doesnt really like when I wear makeup!)” -Alexis M. (photo credit to Meghan Sepe, and hair by Jen Gonzalez).

“Chris and I first met back in 1997…
We’d both just graduated from college and were working in Washington DC.  A girlfriend of mine told me that a friend of hers from college lived in DC too, and we should meet up.  So we did, and through her I was introduced to a good group of people that ended up being my friends for the 2 years I was in DC. Chris was among that group.  But after my two years in DC were up, I moved away for school, and we did not stay in touch.  Fast forward ten years, and I was living in Buffalo NY, getting ready to move to Hartford CT, when Chris popped up on my facebook as “someone you may know”.  I thought “gee, what a blast from the past! Wonder how he’s doing!” I looked at his page- and it turned out he too lived in Hartford! I sent him a message, under the guise of “just moving to town, don’t know anybody, what are fun things to do?”.  It took him a while, but, eventually he answered.  And eventually, we agreed to meet.

The rest, as they say, is history
. We dated for a year while I was in Hartford, then we both moved to RI (where I grew up). In June of 2011, just before our  two year anniversary, he proposed. It was a Sunday afternoon & I had been called into work. When I got home I noticed something on our dog’s collar. After taking a closer look, I realized it was a tiny box. I opened it up, and inside was the most beautiful ring! Come to find out, he’d been secretly working with my sister (a jewelry designer) designing a custom ring, for several months.  I made my way into the house,  and on the back porch were candles and a bottle of champagne.
We were engaged and married on June 16 of the next year (2012)… so we planned our wedding for about a year. The ceremony was at St. Columba’s church in Middletown, and the reception was at The Clambake Club.  I tried on maybe 10-15 dresses before finding mine. I found it at my third appointment, which was at Kleinfeld in NY, however, I must say it was much less dramatic than on “Say Yes to the Dress”!!
Fortunately, there were really no mishaps on the wedding day! Our dance floor was a little smaller than we’d expected so we couldn’t do our first dance quite as we’d choreographed it so we had to “wing it” a bit- but that probably made it better as we just had fun and didn’t worry about getting it exactly right!
I honestly don’t think I would do anything differently. The day was perfect just as it was- and exactly what we wanted.
I think the best advice I have to offer is- don’t get yourself too wrapped up in and stressed out by the little details.  I see girls get so overwhelmed by color scheme, favors, gifts for the wedding party, cake toppers, getting the bridesmaids’ bouquets EXACTLY right etc… No one will notice/remember those things at the end of the day, and it’s not worth blowing your budget and losing your sanity.  I also tried to stay timeless and classic, and stay away from a lot of things that are so trendy in magazines right now.  I didn’t want to look back and think “oh yes. She got married in the phase of “rustic vintage”" or whatever.
I wish I could get married all over again!”

Congratulations! You are now the brides’…

A funny and truthful take on the life of a bridesmaid, from one of our fabulous anonymous blog followers. Here is her rendition of the modern bridesmaid. Enjoy! :)

I hope by now we've all seen the movie "Bridesmaids", if not, you must watch it.

Congratulations! You are now officially the Bride’s Bitch!

Every girl dreams of having their siblings, closest cousins and best friends ask them those 5 little words: “Will you be my Bridesmaid?!”  However, no one ever tells you that once you say “Yes” you have just made yourself the Bride’s bitch. Your job from the time you say “Yes” until the time she says “I Do”, is to keep your mouth shut, a smile on your face, your cell phone handy and kiss your bank account goodbye.

The Dreaded Bridesmaid Dress Shopping
The Bride has a vision, do not mess with it.  Chances are, she has not taken into account the weather, the price of the dress, individual body types of her Bridesmaids and definitely not your opinion. She does not care that the dress is so puffy that 5 Munchkins could fit underneath like in The Wizard of Oz nor does she care that the Wedding Day weather is predicted to be 100, she still wants that dark color floor length 3 layer dress.  So what if the dress is $350, you’re buying a new home, it’s Christmas season and you can never wear it again? Not the Bride’s problem, it matches the vision in her head, so you better pony up the dough. Does not matter if every Bridesmaid loves a particular dress, if the Bride does not, the dress is a no-go, no questions asked.  Best advice is that while trying on bridesmaid dresses, never give your true opinion, ESPECIALLY if it contradicts the Bride’s. Negative responses are only welcomed if the Bride has already said she does not like the dress; otherwise for your own personal safety, zip it.

The Bridal Shower
The Matron/Maid of Honor and the Mother of the Bride always take this task on themselves.  They will feel obligated to ask your opinion on location, colors and themes, however, note that they will take zero of it into consideration.  Your roll for the day of the bridal shower is to dress nicely, show up early, help set up the decor, write down who gave what gifts, create the bow/ribbon bouquet, take all gift wrapping trash and of course, fork over a check for whatever amount the Matron/Maid of Honor and the Mother of the Bride say you owe.

The Bachelorette Party
Chances are the Bride will pick a dress color you are to wear, do not deviate and do not out bling, out shimmer, out sparkle the Bride and definitely do NOT wear anything white, you’ll be left behind. Be prepared to drop some dough because the Bride will not be purchasing anything tonight and chances are planes, dinner, a limo, a hotel, cover charges and obviously drinks upon drinks will be involved. Best piece of advice, tell as many men as you can find that she’s getting married and watch the free drinks flow.  No matter what people say, penis straws, erasers, whistles and blow-ups are not a bachelorette necessity; they just make you that much more annoying to other bar patrons.  Keep the Bride as liquored up as possible, with the ability to walk by herself of course.

Oh yes,  the Wedding Day
If the Bride requests that jewelry and shoes be pre-approved (yes she will request pre-approval) send screen shots along before you waste your time purchasing and shipping something she’s going to hate anyway. If the Bride requests everyone’s hair be up, and you hate your huge forehead, you better think about getting some bangs because there will be no exceptions.  Either tan like you’ve just come back from Aruba or wear SPF60, avoid the beach all summer and look like you’ve never seen a day in the sun, whatever the Bride tells you is what will be. And trust me, the color of your skin will be addressed, just keep reading that email of dos and don’ts she sends out bi-weekly.  If you’ve made it to the morning of the Wedding, congratulations! You have kept enough composure and patience to not strangle Bridezilla, props to you, give yourself a pat on the back.  To keep things going smoothly the morning of the Wedding, have the Bride pop a Xanax and keep those Mimosas coming.  However all those times you’ve wanted to pull your hair out, evens out in the end when you see the Bride in her dress for the first time.  At that exact moment, you realize why you said “Yes” in the first place.  Don’t worry, your bank account will slowly begin to forgive you…until you’re asked those 5 little words again that is.

The Modern Bride: A Twist on Classic & New

A more modern twist on classic bridal looks!

A bride’s wedding day is one of the most bittersweet days of her life. Months and sometimes years of planning all leading up to those short 6 hours spent celebrating the night away.

Perhaps one of the most exciting elements of the wedding day, aside from the centerpieces, flowers, and decor, is the bride herself. The time we live in today allows modern day brides to experiment with less than traditional looks and sway away from the norm. Wedding gowns have become more adorned with details such as crystals, and lace latticework in the back of the bodice. Shoes have become fancier, less traditional, and more fashionable. The bridesmaids dresses have also taken a step outside of the box, with variations in colors, textures and styles.

The wedding details have also left much room for creativity, colors, and details. The typical neutral color scheme has been enhanced by brighter hues.

Here are some amazing, and sometimes different, wedding looks we have found for the modern day bride.

What do I need to touch up?

What should I bring with me for touch ups on my wedding day?!

This is a question I have from my clients at least once a day.

Some examples: NYX Blotting Papers; Makeup Forever 'Full Cover' Concealer; Stila Blush 'Petunia'; All Available at Sephora Stores. Jennie Kay Glosses, available at the beauty parlour

In my professional and personal opinion, you should have these 4 things in your clutch on your wedding day

  1. Blotting Papers
  2. Concealer
  3. Lipgloss
  4. Blush

Your photographer can likely camouflage any bags, shine, or puffiness under your eyes, however, these items are key to insuring you are confident, and worry free in all of those instagram, tweets, and facebook posts you are tagged in throughout the day! Above we’ve shown some examples of great products that are small and compact enough to fit in your purse.

Don’t hesitate to ask your stylist about colors and products that would work best for you on your day — i.e: color matching concealer, a lipgloss that closest matches the color your artists uses on you, etc.

On your wedding day, Jennie Kay Beauty also offers additional staying time for hourly touch-ups if you or your bridal party need. Our professional tools, endless makeup, techniques, and experience ensure you will look your greatest on your day. Don’t hesistate to ask about this service and seek pricing for your day.

xoxo Jennie Kay
