To Try: Dermalash Mascara

Always on the hunt for the perfect mascara? Dermaquest Dermalash Mascara is one of the few mascaras I’ve seen (since Maybelline’s coveted, and discontinued, comb wand back in 2005!) with this thin wand and comb like prongs that hold the mascara. An affordable price, between the designer lines and drugstore lines, at $35 you receive a tube full of peptides that aid in producing fuller, non-clumping lashes.

The ingredients in the mascara are natural, mineral pigmented, and it strengthens rather than irritates and weakens delicate lashes. What I like most about the ingredient formulation, is that ingredient number 1 is “water”, and several other naturally derived ingredients and formulations. Apply 1 or several coats to achieve the perfect look. The product above is shown in black, however, it is also featured in a rich brown color that looks great on blondes or brunettes for a more natural look!

Style File: Tulle Skirts

In the midst of Spring fever, Jennie Kay & Erin McGinn collaborated for another installment of the Style File. This time, featuring a fabulous Tulle Skirt created by Tutu Cute & Co.
Our inspiration?
Well first off, the amazing tulle skirt, a bit of Carrie Bradshaw, cupcakes, ice cream sundae’s, glitter, jewels, & of course fun yet wearable hair & makeup.

We ventured down to Bowen’s Wharf in Newport…

…besides our weather forecast hiccup–sunny, windy, high of 38* (not very tutu friendly!) we decided to go somewhere sweet, warm, & with fabulous light!
One of the fabulous shops on Bowen’s Wharf.

Glitter Platforms by ALDO

Jennie Kay applied laura mercier radiance primer, Makeup Forever Mat Velvet foundation, and  Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush  to Stephanie’s face.

A pink & gold glitter gel manicure by the island favorite ‘Star Nails’

A hint of gold glitter liner from MAC Cosmetics atop a black cake liner from Illamasqua to creates a luminary effect on the eye finishing the lips with  Stila color balm lipstick in Betsey.

We then decided to head over to the Brick Alley Pub for some snacks, of course…

Stila’s lipcolor in Betsey withstood 2 helpings of ice cream and sorbet … a true test in my book!

Oh and by the way, we highly suggest heading over to the Brick Alley Pub for dessert … the sorbet & sundae’s are no joke! :)

Spring Lip

Tuck your oxblood fall lipsticks away in your makeup drawers…Spring has arrived!

I highly doubt I’m the only one who thinks that us New Englanders have had an awfully long winter. Couldn’t be more ready for flip flops, sun tans, and fabulous summer makeup looks.

In lieu of the beautiful weather today, we urge you to dig out your pretty pinks, corals, and nude lip colors and share with us which colors are your go-to’s for Spring.

Here are some fabulous hues others have chosen:

Matte is the continuing trend of 2012-2013, try a glossy look for daytime and a matte look in the evening.

Jennie Kay Spring Makeup Shoot

By popular demand, we recently produced a photoshoot that showcased six of the most popularly requested makeup-looks, for both day and night. These looks are quite simple to achieve and can be a staple to any outfit or look.

Here are our favorite six go-to makeup looks of the moment:

Note: Livia’s face was prepped and primed with Laura Mercier primer, then we applied Armani Silk Foundation followed by  Stila all over shimmer liquid luminizer in kitten shimmer above her cheek bones and on her brow bone to highlight her beautiful features. Her brows were filled in with Givenchy Eyebrow Show Powdery Eyebrow Pencil in Brunette

To achieve this look: Start with a clean, makeup free face. Prep and prime, and apply foundation as usual. Dust MACPrism’ blush on apples of cheeks and blend into hairline softly.  Jennie Kay used MAC Subculture lipliner, followed by Makeup Forever Nude lip color in ‘N23‘. Apply a coat or two of your favorite mascara; used here, Maybelline Falsies in Blackest Black

To achieve this look: Start with a clean, makeup free face. Prep and prime, and apply foundation as usual. Making a ‘kiss face’, dust MAC Fleur Power to apples of cheeks, contouring along your cheek bone, blending outward but not exceeding the cheek bones. Apply a coat or two of mascara, used here, Maybelline Falsies mascara in Blackest Black. Using a lip blush, apply Stila lip color in Betsey, for a fun and flirty dimension to your look.

To achieve this look: Start with a clean, makeup free face. Prep and prime, and apply foundation as usual. Dust MAC Dame’ on the cheeks for a blushed look. Apply a coat or two of mascara, used here, Maybelline Falsies mascara in Blackest Black. Using a lip blush, apply NARSCruella‘ to the lips.

To achieve this look: Start with a clean, makeup free face. Prep and prime, and apply foundation as usual. This look is the same as above, however, we added a new dimension with a winged wedge liner. We used Jennie Kay Beauty Brand Cake wedge liner, and NARS ‘Cruella‘ on her lips. This liner adds instant drama to her eyes, balancing with her dramatic red lip. Be bold and wear this as a casual day look, or wear as a fun nighttime look that calls attention to the eyes and lips.

To achieve this look: Start with a clean, makeup free face. Prep and prime, and apply foundation as usual. Jennie Kay used Makeup Forever Aqua Cream base in ‘N23′. She then applied and smudged Jennie Kay Brand Cake eyeliner to Livia’s top and bottom lid. Using the Makeup ForeverTechnicolor Palate’ Black, she applied and blended just below her outer brow bone, creating a subdued and traditional smokey eye.

To achieve this look: Start with a clean, makeup free face. Prep and prime, and apply foundation as usual. Jennie Kay used the Makeup Forever Aqua Cream as a base in ‘#15′ Taupe. Livia was bronzed using a favorite of the beauty parlour, Too FacedAqua Bunny’ bronzer. Jennie Kay then applied Stila ‘Convertible Color’ in Stone on the lids, top and bottom. Tarte  Amazonian Clay 12h Blush was dusted to her cheeks in ‘Tipsy’. Finally, the look was finished with Jennie Kay Brand lipgloss in ‘Hello Dolly‘.

These looks are extremely convertible, wear one look during the day and add a dramatic liner and lip to create a night look! We hope you love this shoot as much as we did!

A bold and bright lip along with a thick and dramatic cat eye can take a casual Friday night jeans-&-tee outfit to another level.

  • To achieve this look, start with a clean and fresh face. Moisturize!
  • Apply a B.B. Cream to your face such as Stila HD B.B cream (splurge) or Physicians Formula B.B. cream (steal), blending to cover blemishes and imperfections.
  • Apply a concealer, such as one of our favorites, Benefit Cosmetics Erase Paste (splurge) to the under eye area, dab & blend gently (theres no splurge or steal on this one, this product is AMAZING)
  • Line the lash line with a coat of black liquid eyeliner, getting as close to the lashes as possible, such as Makeup Forever Mat Black liner (splurge) or Mark Cosmetics Liquid Liner in Painted Black (steal). Add additional width until the desired look is achieved.
  • Apply a coat or two of your favorite mascara. A great and affordable on is Maybelline Falsies Mascara in blackest black
  • Highlight the cheek bones, brow bones and bride of the nose with an illuminating cream, such as Benefit Cosmetics High Beam (splurge) or L’oreal Magic Lumi (steal)
  • Apply a natural colored cream or powder blush to the apples of your cheeks such as Stila Convertible Color in Petunia (splurge) or Revlon PHOTOREADY in Flushed (steal)
  • Moisturize the lip with a bit of lotion, one without petroleum product which will lead to color bleeding. Apply a color such as NARS Schiep, MAC Pink Pigeon, or MAC Candy Yum Yum to achieve a bold and bright pink lip.
  • Finish the look with a makeup setting spray, such as Urban Decay Dew Me or All Nighter, done!

Jennie Kay Bride: Alexis M.

“I really couldn’t have been happier with my makeup for the wedding.  I was a bit nervous about having airbrush makeup applied because I was afraid it wouldn’t look natural- but Jennie Kay Beauty did such a great job. It lasted all night, and in fact I still looked pretty damn good when I got up the next morning. ;) My mom was even won over & she can be a tough critic. When I saw her after my trial she was stunned. When I met my husband Chris for dinner that night, he just couldn’t stop staring, and just kept saying “wow. you look SO beautiful” (and he doesnt really like when I wear makeup!)” -Alexis M. (photo credit to Meghan Sepe, and hair by Jen Gonzalez).

“Chris and I first met back in 1997…
We’d both just graduated from college and were working in Washington DC.  A girlfriend of mine told me that a friend of hers from college lived in DC too, and we should meet up.  So we did, and through her I was introduced to a good group of people that ended up being my friends for the 2 years I was in DC. Chris was among that group.  But after my two years in DC were up, I moved away for school, and we did not stay in touch.  Fast forward ten years, and I was living in Buffalo NY, getting ready to move to Hartford CT, when Chris popped up on my facebook as “someone you may know”.  I thought “gee, what a blast from the past! Wonder how he’s doing!” I looked at his page- and it turned out he too lived in Hartford! I sent him a message, under the guise of “just moving to town, don’t know anybody, what are fun things to do?”.  It took him a while, but, eventually he answered.  And eventually, we agreed to meet.

The rest, as they say, is history
. We dated for a year while I was in Hartford, then we both moved to RI (where I grew up). In June of 2011, just before our  two year anniversary, he proposed. It was a Sunday afternoon & I had been called into work. When I got home I noticed something on our dog’s collar. After taking a closer look, I realized it was a tiny box. I opened it up, and inside was the most beautiful ring! Come to find out, he’d been secretly working with my sister (a jewelry designer) designing a custom ring, for several months.  I made my way into the house,  and on the back porch were candles and a bottle of champagne.
We were engaged and married on June 16 of the next year (2012)… so we planned our wedding for about a year. The ceremony was at St. Columba’s church in Middletown, and the reception was at The Clambake Club.  I tried on maybe 10-15 dresses before finding mine. I found it at my third appointment, which was at Kleinfeld in NY, however, I must say it was much less dramatic than on “Say Yes to the Dress”!!
Fortunately, there were really no mishaps on the wedding day! Our dance floor was a little smaller than we’d expected so we couldn’t do our first dance quite as we’d choreographed it so we had to “wing it” a bit- but that probably made it better as we just had fun and didn’t worry about getting it exactly right!
I honestly don’t think I would do anything differently. The day was perfect just as it was- and exactly what we wanted.
I think the best advice I have to offer is- don’t get yourself too wrapped up in and stressed out by the little details.  I see girls get so overwhelmed by color scheme, favors, gifts for the wedding party, cake toppers, getting the bridesmaids’ bouquets EXACTLY right etc… No one will notice/remember those things at the end of the day, and it’s not worth blowing your budget and losing your sanity.  I also tried to stay timeless and classic, and stay away from a lot of things that are so trendy in magazines right now.  I didn’t want to look back and think “oh yes. She got married in the phase of “rustic vintage”" or whatever.
I wish I could get married all over again!”

5 Beauty Tips

Wouldn’t we all like our daily routines to go somewhat quicker and smoother from time to time? I’ve found myself countless times coming across amazing and sometimes lifesaving beauty tips, yet I always forget to jot them down. I’ve decided to create a list of five of the best, random, and most relatable beauty tips I’ve come across and used that can be a great help when pressed for time. I’m sure I’ll provide more than five more in the near future, but for now, read on.

1. Sleep on your face? Wake up with sheet marks, puffy eyes, unruly brows, and resembling the phantom of the Opera?
Simple. Splash warm water across your face serveral times, followed by several splashes of cold water to soothe irritated skin, seal your pores and wake you up. Blot your face dry, especially your eye area. Use an old (clean!) toothbrush, spray a shot of hairspray on the brush and comb and tame your brows. Eyes being extra stubborn and puffy today? One of the oldest tricks in the books… I kid you not about this one. Hemorrhoid cream. Yes. Hemorrhoid cream! It contains an anti-inflammatory property that can fight puffy eyes. Dab a pea sized amount under your eyes, and even on red blemishes, and voila!

2. Forgot to book your hair color appointment with Jennie Kay Beauty?
No worries, simply call her and make your next apppointment! No, but really :) .  In the meantime, use your finger, or a comb to tousle and zig zag your part. A straight part shows your roots, whereas a zig zagged line disguises them. Another quick fix — find an eye shadow in a color closest to your hair color and brush onto roots, it’ll hold you over if you’re in a pinch.

3. Late for a date, Scaley skin?
To avoid flaky and dry skin, moisturize immediately after showering or bathing. Your pores are open at this time and make it easier to absorb the moisturizer. Face and body included in this.

4. Without nail polish remover?
Swipe a coat of clear over your polished nails and wipe off immediately. This process removes the color beneath as well.

5. I can’t find a bobby pin….again!!
If you’re like me, you’ve been there, dumping everything from your purse to locate the miniscule skeleton of that one bobby pin you knew you threw in your purse. A solution, finally. Throw a magnet into your purse with a few bobby’s stuck on, it’ll make them a wee bit bigger at the bottom of your bag and they’ll all be in one place. Can’t find bobby’s in your vanity? Grab one of those $2 paperclip holders from CVS or Staples, who said office supplies weren’t for beauty supplies? Genius!

Oxblood Lip

Trending fall color of the moment: Oxblood Red

Oxblood Trend 2012

A deep and infatuating blend of red, wine, and maroon.

How do you wear it?
Casual on a date, jeans, tee, scarf, belted cardigan and some oxfords — opt to wear a gloss over it, this can create a more flirty and casual look
On the red carpet (or simply out, you may feel like you’re on the redcarpet, we all do sometimes ;) ) can be worn with many shades, black, beige,
etcetera, for a bold, feminine, and dressed up look.

The oxblood lip is a statement piece, if you will. Keep your look simple, picture a natural eye – thin liner, a swipe of mascara, a clear and smooth complexion, a hint of rosy blush, add your bold lip and you’re stunning. Sweep your hair up and away into a messy bun, or a tamed ballerina sock bun, for a dramatic look.

Experiment with types of lip color that work best for you — stains, lipsticks, tinted balm, or glosses. Such a plethora of tones in the oxblood/wine color this season that you’re bound to find a color that best fits your coloring.

Incorporate this 2012 color into your wardrobe as well, it’s bound to be a confident and necessary addition to your closet.

How amazing is this Oxblood Alexander Wang dress? Or these prada pumps? These pinterest groupies top left and bottom right sure know how to rock the trend of the season
