The PLUMB Wedding PICNIC

This blog entry is long overdue but it has been on to do list. I do weddings for a living and yet  I never posted my own. Matt and I got married on June 6, 2010.

It was an amazing day, and by far the best wedding I have ever been too! A day that had a tornado warning yet not a drop of rain fell wherever  we were. It rained in several parts of Newport but we were apparently under a own little  umbrella.

We decided to have a private ceremony at Battery Park in Newport, RI. A park that was dear to both of our hearts. It was just immediate family.

My sister and my mom and my amazing mother-in-law to be all got ready at the Beauty Parlour. I stepped in to my custom made gown by the fabulous Jonathon Joseph Peters from project runway season 7, a1 11:30 and made my way to the park in a 1966 blue pontiac bonneville convertible.

After the ceremony where we were married by my amazing and loving uncle. We head back to my in-laws house to take pictures and snack {I was starving}. My amazing friend and photographer Daniel Gagnon was there very step of the way. My second shooter was my other amazing friend Erin Mcginn. {yes all my friends are amazing} We took pictures from the beach to the golf cart rides  up the hill and back to the house.  Meanwhile on the other end of town it was  still down pouring  and where we were not ONE drop on us!

Our guest arrived at 2pm. We greeted them at the door. It was so nice to be able to talk to all of our guest before the Plumb Picnic began. All 300+ guests mingled care free and danced for hours. We didn’t do a formal sit down dinner we opted for a stress free do want you want day. We had the kids swimming in the pool to me booging on the dance floor. We ended the night with some fireworks, and went home as Mr and Mrs. Plumb. NOW before you run ahead and check out  out all of our FAB pictures form the  day  I thought it would be interesting to share with you what we should have done different …..this is my Shoulda Coulda Woulda list

Shoulda Hired Sharkpig as a videographer, I really wish we had a videographer , at the end of the day you can go a relive your wedding After all we all  know bride get the post wedding blues

Coulda Taken more time to do pictures of myself and sister (make a list of the shots you want I never did this opps! )

Shoulda Put my hair up!!! I mean I am a hairstylist and I do weddings why did I have my long hair down on such a hot day. I know I always end up putting it up! Should have gone up!

Woulda Went to one last dress fitting….I changed my shoes last minute. I had originally had a big heel but if you know me I don’t do well with heels so I opted for a kitten heel and never told Jonathon so  needless to say my dress was a bit too long…opps

Other than that I would have changed anything I married the man of my dreams and couldn’t be happier…..First comes Love, Then Comes Marriage….

10 Hair Products We <3 and How To Use Them!

Simply Essentials….right ;) wink wink

1. Batiste Dry Shampoo this is to be used on your day off from washing your hair. It’s your between washes hair freshener that absorbs oil and stink! Spray on your roots and tap in if needed.

2.Moroccanoil Treatment  amazing oil not to be used before any hot tool(i.e. flat iron or curling iron) unless you would like to fry your lovely locks do not use this before. A little bit goes along way, rub both hands together front and back and work ends to mid-shaft that is it! ( i flip my head over and start from underneath that way is less product on your hands by the time you reach the top)FYI if your blonde stick to the oil for blonde hair

3. Minardi Pre Wash Therapy for those tired dry locks of hair…at the beauty parlour we treat while we color! Applied to dry hair it is an amazing product for dry brittle chemically treated hair . This products rebuild the hair with what it is already made of!

4. CHi Iron Guard  always protect you hair before you put a hot tool to your head :) plus it helps keep the curls in better. Spray each section before applying heat

5. Sebastian Re-Shaper Hairspray  a great working brushable lightweight hairspray, it will not leave buildup on the hair as you style, it is flexible so you can build the style with it, and it smells nice. Spray approximately 5 inches from hair as you style!

6. Minardi Subdue  this stuff will not stay on the shelves at the beauty parlour! It is a must in you kit or bag if you have frizzy hair…you are the lioness and this your mane tamer!Frizz Tamer

7. Davines  Melu Shampoo and Conditioner I have both these products under one product we <3 because you really need to use shampoo and conditioners that are made to work together. They are synergistic! Both products are  formulated to be anti-breakage structure repair, and shine enhancing. This is  for that hair that seems to just want to SNAP! off. t Your locks will be easier to comb and with a conditioner that can shorten the drying time you will be outta your house in no time. Make sure to not apply the conditioner to your roots, start at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the mid-shaft

8. Schwarzkopf Dust IT this just may be one of my favorite favorite products. This is a styling product to be used after you wash and dry your hair. It is a texturizing dust. Shake a quarter size amount of product into your hands, then rub both hands together and make your hair WILD! Literally take both hands and give your hair bed head mess it up then tame it back down. It will give you VOLUME, define your layers and give you style almost as good as the one I give you my chair (wink wink)

9. Catwalk by TIGI Curlesque Lightweight Mousse…. a product with a memory yes it give your hair memory so what does that mean?? basically  you can restyle the hair back  to the original style no matter what extrinsic factors have occurred  you can re-shape and re-shape and yes re-shape again. It is lightweight which is great for even the fine haired client trying to achieve volume. I use on wet hair and let air dry OR apply on dry hair blow-dry in to restyle.

10. Its a 10 miracle leave in treatment…  does it all! detangles, smooths and controls frizz, adds shine, flat iron and thermal protectant and smells amazing :) spray in wet and blow dry

Wedding FAQ’s

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions that may make your wedding planning a bit easier.

How far in advance should I book you for my wedding day/event?

We book up very quickly so the sooner the better we have weddings booked as far as 2 years in advance

Do you travel to my location, if so is there a travel fee?

Yes we do go onsite. We do not charge a travel fee to for Newport, RI . You may inquire with us to check our rates for other locations.

Do you offer  on-location services  for special events/occasions or only weddings?

Yes

What do I need to have set up for you on the wedding day?

Nothing we bring it all. We will arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. We bring everything to you! No need to worry just  sit and relax we will be there and you will be looking FABULOUS in no time!

How many people can you accommodate?

We have weddings where it is just the bride to wedding parties of 14. When you reserve the wedding day you are required to list all of the bridal party members who would like services done.

Is it just you or do you have a team?

I do have a team of girls that work for the beauty parlour. We are all licensed cosmetologists and or estheticians. Several of our artists have been in the industry over 8 years. Their resumes range from New York Fashion Week and beyond . Jennie Kay LLC only has the best. Once hired everyone is trained under Jennie Kay.

I would like to have more than one hairstyle on the wedding day, would you stay and restyle my hair?

If we can stay we would love too! The rate is hourly from the time the bride is finished until we are finished restyling you for your second look.

Do you offer discounts for large bridal parties?

We do not offer discounts or sales on our on location services. Occasionally we offer specials for our in studio makeup classes.

How long is the trial?

We book one hour for each service, one hour for hair and one hour for makeup

Should I wash my hair before the trial?

You may wash you hair before the trial just ensure you come in with dry hair

Do I have to have a trial, I live out of state and may not be able to come in for a trial?

No you do not have to have a trial, but it can ensure everything runs smoothly on your wedding day. For example you may need clip-in extensions to achieve the fullness you want in your undo for your day  this is something we  would need to address in the trial. Also you will have to get your marriage license on a weekday so it may be best to schedule the trial on the same day.

I cannot make it to a weekday trial do you do trials on the weekend?

We try our best to fit you in on the weekend. During our busy season May- November we may be unable to get you in on the weekend because we are booked with weddings. This is why we always suggest to schedule a trial when you have to come in to get your marriage license if you are unable to do a weekday.

My skin is very sensitive will I break out from the products?

We only use the products that are infused with the highest quality of ingredients. We have tried tested out our products on our Jennie Kay> her skin is a the most sensitive of sensitive skins, with eczema on her skin all year round on her face we have narrowed down our most favorite skin moisturizers, primers and foundations for each skin type. This is another reason why we suggest doing a trial incase your skin does not react well to the makeup.

What products do you use in your kit?

We love a little bit of everything , the best of every lines! Whats in our kit???

MAC, Makeup-Forever, Laura Mercier, Temptu Pro, NARS,  Jennie Kay Cosmetics, Benefit, and a whole lot of other brands.

 What is Airbrush Makeup?

Airbrush makeup is another alternative to traditional makeup. Please see this blog entry on Airbrush Makeup

Do you do destinations weddings?

Absolutely my bag is already packed!

Do you have a minimum for on location services?

Yes our minimum is $300

What if I cannot make the minimum? Do you offer just hair or makeup for the bride?

Please inquire with us, there have been instances where we were already in the hotel for another wedding.

Will you bring your traveling beauty chair?

Abosolutely! Who wouldn’t want a pictures with a hot pink Chair?

May we use another hairstylist or makeup artist not from Jennie Kay?

Yes, we do not require you to book both services. You can book us for just hair, just makeup or both!

How far in advance should I book my trial?

It really depends on you and your schedule. A great time frame is anywhere from 3 months to a few days before your wedding. But again when it is best for you, it what is best for us.

We wish you the best! Be Calm and Get your wedding on….

Airbrush Makeup

Truth be told, I hated airbrush when I first started..yes, HATED! Years and several classes later (after testing out multiple companies’ products), I learned to retrain my eye in this new medium. I found my groove, favorite product and I am now BEYOND OBSESSED! It is AHHHMAZZING :) So let me tell you a little story about airbrush makeup. What exactly is airbrush makeup?? This may be a top question in the Parlour, so here are the facts… Everyone seems to think it is the latest and the greatest..well it really is , BUT it has been around for quite some time now. Airbrush makeup  was actually started back in the late 1800′s  (pre-photoshop life) but it has evolved quite a bit since then. Why is it so popular now? The high-definition world has now reached the consumer market, and therefore traditional makeup techniques were forced to evolve overnight. HD Lens can literally detect every line and freckle. So that pound of foundation and bronzer you have on, AH, not going to fly! The more pixels the camera lens has means the sharper the picture will be (airbrush makeup means less photoshopping later) . It also means that you will looking flawless on your friends camera phone when she instantly uploads your pic to Facebook, tumblr, or instagram. We  needed a makeup that did not sit in the lines and was able to sustain all external factors throughout the day less touch ups+ perfect color matching = ZERO build up of color on the skin There was a need for makeup to look less “made-up” . So good by to that line of demarcation on your jawline YOU are now flawless naturally  (wink wink ) So now your skin looks amazing as the lovely Emma Stone. Thank you technology!

Emma Stone Makeup

Okay back to the fundamentals….A professional airbrushing makeup artist will come to your event/wedding with a compressor and a makeup gun  in hand.

The one shown here we use at the Parlour from Temptu Pro

The makeup comes in liquid form. A few drops are added to the gun where it is then compressed through the gun with a flow of  air. The air pressure is measured in what is called the psi (pounds per square inch). A trained airbrush artist will know how to adjust the psi level for each part of the body. This is important because you will need a higher psi for the body than the eyelid, you do not want to push the makeup into skin. Now the few drops of liquid makeup are  pressed through the gun with an evenly distributed fine mist of product controlled completely by one finger (the trigger finger) IF now I say IF it is down correctly you should not be able to see the makeup on the skin. The makeup “sits on” top of your skin still allowing it to breath and looking completely flawless! But, again here is the but  these are some things to consider

  • If your skin is dry like any other foundation it will be visible to they eye

Here are some factors that come along with air brushing that would come into play if you were using a traditional foundation as well.

Taking proper care of your skin can only enhance any foundation you use on your skin. We will get to proper skincare in another blog entry. Now that we have briefed you on the history of the airbrush as well as how it is applied..Here are the facts!  Now this is based on the Temptu Pro  product we use in our beauty parlour for weddings/special events.  There a so many other fabulous airbrush products and different types of formulations for specific needs, but this is what we use, are trained in extensively and love more than anything!

  • Non transferable (will not rub off on your dress or your groom)
  • Seamless, Flawless and undetectable  when performed by our artists which means flawless face on every camera lens not just your wedding photographer
  • Long wearing, no need to power that nose 3 hours later!
  • Lightwieght texture (airbrush does not mean a MASK of makeup)
  • Sanitary Although we thoroughly clean each and every brush after it is used on every client and then we give our brushes a bubble bath after every day then we disinfect!  some artists  may not….making airbrush the ideal choice if you are concerned with sanitary practices but if you have booked us or you are going to fear not we use Beauty So Clean , 99% alcohol and we NEVER NEVER double DIP! Double Dipping is gross and icky!
  • Tear, sweat, and streak proof
  • Hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic (will not clog your pores)
  • One of my favorites! We can create your perfect custom color!!! yes perfect :) So if your forehead and chin are always a different color well that will not happen on my watch!

Now that you know the facts! We will brag just a bit…. Jennie Kay is a Advanced Temptu Pro trained artist. She has training in advanced beauty techniques (yes she can airbrush your eye makeup on flawlessly (she is that good!) as well as special effects makeup.

Things We Love…Pinterest!

I cannot express how much I LOVE this site. Pinterest is basically a place online that you can create mood boards or inspiration boards of things you like. You can create boards for anything from your favorite quotes to live by, to that  new couch you have been wanting for your living room. All you do is ‘pin it’!

Why  else do I love Pinterest?

  1. It can satisfy your shopping addiction daily without buying anything
  2. you can organize your thoughts an ideas into visual board
  3. and just because its FREE

On Pinterest you also follow people you find interesting, when they Pin something to their board, you can like it, comment on it, or repin it!

Now  you ask …where do you get the pictures from if you are not stealing it off other people boards? You can install a “pin it” button to the task bar of your bookmarks on your browser. When you are looking online for ideas on how to redo you kitchen or organize your closet you click the ‘pin it button’, it then pulls up another browser, you select the picture you want to pin and what board  you would like to pin too! It is just that simple and that amazing…Check out some of my inspiration boards on My Pinterest. Happy Pinning!
